A message to our learning community After much consideration, we’ve made the decision to close the Improve Veterinary Practice platform on 13 January 2026. Improve Veterinary Practice was built to support vets and nurses at every stage of their career, and while this chapter is ending, a new one is starting at Improve Veterinary Education. We couldn’t be more grateful for the community you’ve helped us build and hope to see you on this exciting next step. Find out more

Autumnal dangers advice from TVM

To help educate pet owners on these Autumnal dangers, TVM has produced an eye-catching poster for waiting rooms detailing the key hazards owners should look out for

As the nights draw in and the weather gets colder, Autumn is the perfect time for long walks in the country or snuggling up on the sofa – but the colder months also present certain dangers to pets which many owners are still not aware of. To help educate pet owners on these Autumnal dangers, TVM has produced an eye-catching poster for waiting rooms detailing the key hazards owners should look out for.

The poster provides information on common ‘Pet Dangers’ including:

  • Human cold and flu medication
  • Rat poison
  • Xylitol
  • Chocolate
  • Anti-freeze
  • Acorns and conkers
  • Mushrooms
  • Mouldy food

As well as focusing on these potential threats, the poster also reinforces the importance of SPEED when dealing with poisoned pets:
  • Stop the pet eating any more suspected poison
  • Phone the vets
  • Emergency appointment
  • Evidence – bring labels/samples/vomit
  • Don’t delay!

Nicki Glen, Marketing Project Manager at TVM explains: “As the seasons change, so do the risks to pets of certain hazards that surround us in our everyday environment. The Autumn poster helps vets give a visual prompt to owners about the dangers that these items can pose.”
