The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) has announced a brand-new Vet Nurse Merit Award (VNMA) in Dentistry, starting in September 2024. The VNMA’s are designed for the motivated nurse in primary care practice and offers structured CPD for qualified veterinary nurses who have an interest in developing their knowledge and skills.

Accounting for 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD), the VNMA in Dentistry will help delegates to feel confident in the following areas:

  • Identifying abnormalities in the mouth, performing oral exams under anaesthesia and when conscious, while having an underlying knowledge of dental anatomy
  • Be able to obtain dental radiographs and understand them fully
  • Making anaesthesia and analgesia plans for dental treatment, feeling confident in potential side effects
  • Correct annotate a dental chart and safely scale and polish the teeth
  • Maintain and identify dental instrumentation and equipment

The programme consists of 10 recorded webinar sessions, as well as an online resource including a discussion forum for delegates to connect. A practical attendance course will take place at Woodrow House, Gloucester. This will give delegates the chance to meet the colleagues who have been studying at the same time, and to get hands on experience in various practical sessions.

Lead speaker, Stacey Parker said: “This is suitable for all nurses in veterinary practice who are familiar with dental procedures, and there’s a huge amount of content which I’m really excited to be able to deliver as part of this new Vet Nurse Merit Award.”

Fees for the VNMA in Dentistry are £570.00 for BSAVA Members and £840.00 for Non-members. Places are limited, so book soon to avoid disappointment. You can find out more and book your place via the BSAVA website.
