With just one week to go until the launch of Guinea Pig Awareness Week 2023(GPAW), the organisers behind the UK’s largest campaign of its kind are urging vets’ practices to get involved by downloading a free digital pack containing resources to assist them in running their own events.
This year’s campaign, which takes place from 25 to 29 September, is all about “Rescue and Rehome”. It aims to help the many hundreds of guinea pigs in UK rescue centres in need of their forever homes, as well as touching on other key aspects of guinea pig care and their five welfare needs.
Dr Suzanne Moyes, MVB, MRCVS, deputy managing director and in-house vet at Burgess Pet Care (organisers of GPAW 2023) says: “We know the important role that the vet community plays in ensuring that owners have access to the right information about guinea pigs, which is why we would love to see more practices than ever downloading our free GPAW 2023 digital packs.
“These packs are full of resources including a comprehensive guinea pig care guide, guidance on how to run a great GPAW campaign and bunting and printable posters to create in-surgery displays.
“Given the growing number of guinea pigs in rescues and in need of loving forever homes, it is really important that we educate as many owners as possible, so that these wonderful creatures can live the happy life they deserve.
“Working with our charity supporters the RSPCA, Woodgreen Pets Charity, Blue Cross and Raystede, we hope that GPAW 2023 is the most successful campaign yet as we continue to improve the welfare of these gorgeous creatures.”
Guinea Pig Awareness Week will take place online on the GPAW social channels:
- Guinea Pig Awareness Week Facebook
- Guinea Pig Awareness Week Instagram
- Guinea Pig Awareness Week Twitter
During GPAW there will be a wealth of activity designed to raise awareness around guinea pigs and their key welfare needs, including blogs, videos, case studies – and of course, details of guinea pigs in search for their forever homes.
