The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) is to host a free webinar to explore the meaning of veterinary leadership in the 21st century. The webinar will be led by Richard (Rich) Casey, president of the UK’s Veterinary Management Group (VMG).
A 2019 UK survey organized by VMG found that many of the skills most important to lead 21st century veterinary businesses are currently prioritized the least by leaders and managers in veterinary practice.
As the veterinary sector struggles to overcome the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to other challenges thrown up by today’s volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world, Rich Casey believes that this is not good enough.
During the webinar, he will explore:
- The role of the veterinary professional in leading on welfare for animals
- The leadership competencies required of all veterinary professionals
- Understanding ourselves as leaders and the effects of our leadership style on our teams
WSAVA President Siraya Chunekamrai will moderate the webinar, which will include participation from WSAVA member veterinarians from Argentina, Nigeria and the Philippines. The webinar will be followed by a Q&A.
Rich Casey holds an Executive MBA, Post Graduate Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership, and Diploma in Learning and Development Practice.
The VMG is a UK-based association representing those in leadership and management roles in the veterinary sector. Rick Casey said: “As we face the challenge of guiding our teams through these unprecedented times and into the ‘new normal’, the need for excellent leadership has never been more vital.
“During the webinar we will explore the key challenges faced by WSAVA members in this area and discuss what excellent veterinary leadership actually looks like. It is an exciting opportunity to share experiences and learnings with colleagues from around the world in order to help make better and more effective leaders out of us all.”
