Surrey student wins Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Student Community Award

Award recognises a veterinary or veterinary nursing student who has made a real effort to support their colleagues and the wider community

Jack Church, a fourth-year veterinary student at the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine, has been named as one of the inaugural recipients of the RCVS‘ Student Community Award.

The Student Community Award recognises a veterinary or veterinary nursing student who has made a real effort to support their colleagues and the wider community.

Alongside his studies, Jack spent much of last year volunteering at an adult ICU COVID-19 ward, completing 12-hour shifts and undertaking various tasks including helping the doctors and nurses put on their personal protective equipment (PPE).

Jack will be presented with his award at this year’s RCVS Honours and Awards Ceremony, set to take place in September 2021.

Professor Chris Proudman, Head of the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Surrey said, “This is a well-deserved accolade for a member of the school, many of whom, in various ways, have served their communities during the pandemic. It also illustrates how the transferable skills learnt during a veterinary degree have application beyond animal health; a great example of the ‘One Health’ philosophy in action. My warmest congratulations go to Jack.”
