MSD Animal Health (a division of Merck and Co., Inc., Kenilworth, N.J., USA) has awarded Hattie Barnes, Resident in Equine Surgery at the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital, University of Liverpool, with the 2020 Veterinary Surgeon Research Bursary in the companion animal sector. Hattie has been awarded £4,000 for her analytical, cadaver-based study that will investigate different draping protocols in elective equine orthopaedic surgery. Hattie is currently undertaking a 3 year residency in Equine Surgery at the University of Liverpool.
Hattie Barnes comments: “Surgical site draping for elective surgical procedures remains a vital component in preventing bacterial contamination, and in doing so can directly influence the development of surgical site infections. There are currently a variety of draping protocols used for elective equine orthopaedic procedures with minimal evidence to recommend one over another. As such, some practices may be negatively impacting on the post-operative welfare of equine patients. I therefore believe this project has the potential to have a significant impact on the equine veterinary profession, and most importantly, on the influence of elective surgery on animal welfare.”
Annabelle Mohring, Veterinary Advisor at MSD Animal Health adds: “Hattie’s research proposal was selected for its clear focus on improving practices and the potential benefits this can bring to veterinary surgery. We’re excited to see the work progress and the recommendations that will result as it supports our commitment to the science of healthier animals.”
The MSD Animal Health Vet Surgeon Research Bursary offers awards of up to £4,000 each. Applications for 2021 will be welcomed from August this year. For further details go to the MSD Animal Health Research Bursary website.
