A message to our learning community After much consideration, we’ve made the decision to close the Improve Veterinary Practice platform on 13 January 2026. Improve Veterinary Practice was built to support vets and nurses at every stage of their career, and while this chapter is ending, a new one is starting at Improve Veterinary Education. Melissa Donald

Melissa Donald graduated in 1987, starting her career as a food production animal intern at Iowa State University, USA. In 1990 she joined a traditional two-vet mixed practice on the Ayrshire coast, covering the Isle of Cumbrae, and stayed there, developing the practice, for 25 years. After selling up in 2014, Melissa continued with a portfolio career, working in organisations such as Red Tractor, British Veterinary Association, Scottish SPCA and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, of which she was  President for the 2022/23 period.
