The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) is the UK’s largest and most established companion animal behaviour organisation. To mark its 35th anniversary, the APBC is holding a two-day conference in April 2024 where world-renowned expert speakers will share their unique perspectives on the human-animal relationship.
This conference is of interest to all pet professionals and indeed owners, not just behaviourists.
Behavioural issues do not happen in a vacuum and for owners, the first port of call for help is often their veterinary practice. So It is critical for a positive outcome that we all explore the experiences of the animal to get to the root of the issue and from there explore ways of helping the animal and their owners.
The conference titled “One World, One Health, One Welfare” in Daventry, Northamptonshire, will explore the complex relationships between humans and animals in the community, the consequences of pet ownership and how these effect the welfare of people, animals and the environment.
Among the 16 world-renowned experts is Dr Rebeca Garcia Pillinos, a certified RCVS specialist in animal welfare, ethics and law and founder of the One Welfare organisation. Rebeca is the first animal welfare expert to be employed by the United Nations Environment Programme and a recipient of the James Herriot Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to companion animal welfare.
Another is Professor James Serpell, emeritus professor of animal welfare (School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania), who will discuss the sustainability of pet ownership. James is a leading, global expert on animal behaviour and welfare having published over 200 articles and books on animal behaviour, welfare and human-animal interactions.
Other experts will bring alive topics such as the welfare of assistance dogs, canines working in disaster areas, no-kill policies, the exotic pet trade, and fashion in pet ownership.
The conference, which takes place at the Mercure Hotel, Daventry, on 20 and 21 April 2024, is open to ALL animal professionals and the public.
