New edition of the Small Animal Formulary launched at BSAVA Congress

The 11th edition of the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary sees the simultaneous release of both Part A: Canine and Feline and Part B: Exotic Pets at BSAVA Congress 2023

The BSAVA Small Animal Formulary has been one of the Association’s most trusted and highly valued publications for over a quarter of a century.

The 11th edition sees the simultaneous release of both Part A: Canine and Feline and Part B: Exotic Pets at BSAVA Congress 2023

Fergus Allerton and Joanna Hedley have reprised their roles as editor-in-chief of Part A: Canine and Feline and Part B: Exotic Pets of the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary, respectively.

The drug monographs for both formularies were thoroughly revised and updated by the Editorial Panels during 2022 to ensure that the most up-to-date information is provided on the medications used for dogs, cats and exotic pets.

Key points for the latest edition of Part A include:

  • 20 new drug monographs
  • Products authorised for use in dogs and/or cats are indicated in the monographs
  • Drugs available as extemporaneous products (also known as “veterinary specials”) are denoted as VSP in the formulations section of the monographs
  • Guidelines on the responsible use of antibiotics have been reviewed and updated with the addition of a table detailing antimicrobial susceptibility
  • Sedation protocol for dogs with the ABCB1 gene and a mycobacterial protocol for cats have been added to the Appendix

Key points for the latest edition of BSAVA Small Animal Formulary Part B include:

  • Seven new drugs
  • Products that are authorised for use in one or more of the exotic pet species listed in the monograph are marked in bold text
  • The information on the prescribing cascade in the introduction has been expanded to take into account the different marketing authorisations in the UK, Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Drugs available as extemporaneous products (also known as “veterinary specials”) are denoted as VSP in the formulations section of the monographs
  • Guidelines for the responsible use of parasiticides
