Professor Stuart Reid CBE, president and principal of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has been granted an Honorary Life Membership of the Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine (SVEPM) for his support of the Society and lifetime of service.
The SVEPM was founded in 1982 and comprises approximately 250 veterinary and non-veterinary members from 24 countries. Its mission is to enable professionals to meet and share knowledge to improve the health of animals, humans and the environment. As part of this, the Society awards honorary life memberships in recognition of individual’s contributions to the field of veterinary epidemiology, preventive medicine, and economics.
Professor Stuart Reid was selected in acknowledgement of his work for the Society and his contribution to epidemiology and preventive medicine. The Life Membership was presented to him at the latest SVEPM conference which took place 23-25 March in Belfast.
Stuart Reid is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology and in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in the USA in 2019 and holds Fellowships at the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases in the USA and the RCVS.
His research interests remain focused on zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance in a One Health context.

“The Society plays a pivotal role in bringing together researchers from many disciplines to champion epidemiology, preventive medicine and economics for the betterment of animal and human health – but it also provides a social fabric to a community that is supportive and ultimately makes being a member a pleasure and a privilege.”
Nominations are made by the general membership, channelled though the President and the decision is made in consultation with the Executive Committee. Currently, there are only 21 members who have received this honorary status.
