New EMS programme launched to support students interested in veterinary policy and regulation

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons launch two streams of new extra-mural studies placements, “Project Stream” and “Policy Stream”, for UK-based students interested in advancing their knowledge of policy and regulation

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has launched two new streams of internal extra-mural studies (EMS) placements for UK-based veterinary students who are interested in advancing their knowledge of veterinary policy and regulation.

These new placements consist of a “Project Stream”, which will be run by the RCVS, where students can learn about the aims and activities of various workstreams and how they fit into the veterinary professions and a “Policy Stream”, which will be a joint placement between the RCVS and the Veterinary Policy Research Foundation (VPRF) a not-for-profit research organisation supporting the formulation of evidence-based veterinary policy and legislation in the House of Lords.

The Policy Stream is a chance for students to gain insight into the democratic and legislative process in the UK and learn about policy issues in the veterinary profession.

Each placement will last one week and during their time there, students will shadow staff members, attend various meetings and carry out a range of activities integral to the organisations’ functions and objectives. The placements provide a valuable contribution to the veterinary profession while also giving veterinary students the chance to learn more about the wide range of roles veterinary professionals can play in society.

Expenses to cover travel and accommodation during the placements are provided by the RCVS and are available upon application for eligible students.

Senior Leadership Officer and EMS project lead, Ceri Chick, commented: “We are pleased to offer these fully-funded EMS placements and anticipate that they will provide students with valuable insight into the inner workings of the RCVS and the VPRF. Students will get hands-on experience supporting teams with ongoing projects, learn about the regulation of veterinary education, and help with business-as-usual activities.

“Our aim is for these placements to be enjoyable and informative opportunities and help to demonstrate the approachability of the RCVS. We look forward to welcoming students later this year.”

The placement application form and more information, including available dates, can be found online.
