Celebrating 10 years of supporting pet health with Anallergenic, founded on over a decade of research and innovation

Royal Canin celebrates 10 years of supporting pet health with Anallergenic, underscoring their five-decade-long commitment to supporting pet health through science-based nutrition

In 2021, Royal Canin is proud to be celebrating 10 years supporting pet health with Anallergenic, a breakthrough nutritional solution developed through a decade of scientific research to support pets, and vets, by delivering a reliable tool for food allergy investigation and management.

Skin issues consistently rank among the top reasons for consulting a veterinarian and can significantly affect pets’ quality of life Over the past decade, thousands of dogs and cats worldwide have been able to live more comfortable lives – overcoming previous issues associated with adverse food reaction such as lesioned, pruritic, and inflamed skin, chronic itching, sometimes combined with digestive signs – with the support of Anallergenic.

Adverse food reaction is the third most common skin allergy in dogs and the second most common in cats. It is prevalent in up to 20 percent of the cases of all pruritic diseases. The symptoms of adverse food reaction – such as diarrhea, itchiness and skin lesions including otitis in some cases – can be distressing for both pets and pet owners, may require medical treatment, and are likely to substantially affect the overall quality of life of a pet. Additionally, diagnosing allergic skin conditions and managing them effectively can be challenging and frustrating for veterinarians.

Anallergenic was developed to help address these challenges when they are not fully managed with more traditional hydrolyzed protein-based foods. In addition, it may be used as a reliable tool in the investigation of adverse food reaction. It achieves this by using specific production features: a new source of protein, extensively hydrolyzed to lower the risk of immune reaction; purified starch; and an extensive factory cleaning routine, combined with cutting-edge technologies and testing, to ensure fewer ancillary proteins are present.

“I’ve been recommending Anallergenic as an elimination diet for my canine patients for more than five years now,” said Dominique Héripret, DrVet, DipECVD, EBVS Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology at the Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire Pommery, Reims, France, and the Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire Frégis, Arcueil, France. “It is reassuring to know the results of the product is proven and that clients can be confident it is the right option for their pets.”

“We are immensely proud to be celebrating 10 years of helping to improve the lives of pets around the world with Anallergenic”, said Dr Isabelle Lesponne, DVM, Scientific Support Specialist for Dermatology at Royal Canin. “We couldn’t be happier hearing all the positive feedback we have received on the diagnostic work-up, or hearing about some dogs with food allergies or irritable bowel disease (IBD) being successfully supported with nutrition only, once switched onto Anallergenic.”

The science supporting improved skin health for pets

“When first introduced to the concept behind Anallergenic, I was intrigued by this unusual protein source,” said Thierry Olivry, DrVet, PhD, DipECVD, DipACVD. “Years later, results from our studies confirmed that Anallergenic’s extensively-hydrolyzed poultry feather and corn starch proteins were not recognised by IgE antibodies. Ultimately, our small trial showed the benefit of Anallergenic even in chicken-allergic dogs, which would be the toughest of challenges. Royal Canin must be congratulated for this excellent choice of protein source and for sponsoring the work needed to prove the hypoallergenicity and the benefit of this novel concept.”

Years of scientific research and development have confirmed that the Anallergenic range constitutes an efficient dietary solution for the management of complex or refractory adverse food reaction cases, supporting lesion improvement and contributing to pruritus decrease, including in chicken-allergic dogs, and is well tolerated and accepted by cats. In addition, this range of diets constitutes a tool proven reliable in performing elimination trials in a time-efficient way, and with no concerns on purity, protein hydrolysis level, or remaining allergic potential versus starch or protein sources.
